About

Nick James

Nick James is an art-rock musician, composer, and visual designer and a lunatic asshole with for sure a dusting of manic depression amongst other undiagnosed mental health issues. He has four kids and a partner who bug him all the time, never leaving daddy alone enough to finish his rhymes. This is likely why his work is more often instrumental than lyrical. His voice is found through the emotional peaks and valleys of his arrangements. I mean, sometimes he actually sings, but for fuck's sake, have you heard how out of key he sounds?

He's a one-man production, pushing his work out of his hand-built studio; Dad's Basement, in Asheville, North Carolina — strewn with wires, synthesizers, blood, sweat and tears. He might actually sound better if he collaborated with a drummer, or like a cellist (hey, maybe that's you). or frankly anyone with an actual background in music. But no, he's an art school dropout geek who spent fifteen years racing his bicycle around the globe with nothing but head injuries to show for it; impacting his basic ability to think, compose, or even write a biography. And this fucking guy has the nerve to release sounds he banged into a keyboard and thinks he’s gonna be the next David Byrne.

Nick's life and body are scarred with tragedy, and it reflects in his songs. He's clearly using his music as therapy while fist-fucking his own pain and suffering into the earholes of the public. There's hope in his work alongside the sadness — for himself, his family, and the world at large.

Amen.
